It was a dream come true for the youngster to play against one of her idols and a player whose style she’s had comparisons drawn too. Now Gauff will get the chance to play Venus again as they meet in the first round of the Australian Open.

Gauff marked her arrival in the big leagues by beating 39-year-old Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles winner, at Wimbledon in back in July. Gauff built on her entrance into the spotlight by winning her first WTA tournament at the end of last year breaking into the top 100 and earn direct entry to the draw in Melbourne. The teen star stole the hearts of the Wimbledon crowd with her powerful and fearless displays and now she’s made it into her first Grand Slam without needing a wildcard entry.

Britain’s Johanna Konta, who has been struggling with a knee injury, seeded 12th, will play Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur. Konta, reached the semi-finals in Melbourne in 2016 but is on a collision course to meet Serena Williams in the forth round.

The first Grand Slam of the year begins on Monday with the top half of the women’s draw and the bottom half of the men’s draw in action.
