‘We don’t buy superstars, we make them’ – German club, Borussia Dortmund are due to make a huge profit on the departure of one of their young superstars in the summer, a fee most likely to be in excess of £100m. 19 year old Jadon Sancho is due to leave the club in the summer.
Sancho arrived at Dortmund back in 2017 from Manchester City for a free of £10m. This was in line with Dortmund’s recruitment policy of getting young stars that hadn’t started a first-team game for the club they were leaving.
The way we do things didn’t happen by accident, or by coincidence. It is a clear and obvious strategy not to buy superstars but to create them.”Borussia Dortmund midfielder Lars Ricken, who is now the club’s head of youth.
Sancho became the youngest player to reach 22 Bundesliga goals in December. He add this to his achievement of becoming the youngest Dortmund player to score 10 league goals in a single campaign in 2018-19.

- Mario Gotze and Mats Hummels joined Dortmund as untested 19-year-olds. They were both then sold to Bayern Munich for a combined £60m.
Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang weren’t superstars when they came to Dortmund, we developed them to become superstars.Lars Ricken
